S.O.S - Save the baby seals!!!
Over 300,000 baby seals will be clubbed or shot to death mercilessly during Canada's seal hunt this year; many will be skinned alive.
Canadian government officials insist that the seal hunt is a vital part of Canada's economy, yet in reality, the hunt accounts for less than one percent of Newfoundland’s GDP and an average of just $1,000 per sealer per year. Significant amounts of money are actually spent by Canada's government to promote the hunt and to develop new markets for seal products abroad.
When Danny Williams, Premier of Labrador and Newfoundland, was asked about the seal hunt during a recent episode of "Larry King Live" on CNN, he chose to make false statements about the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), claiming to speak on behalf of Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
WHAT HE SAID: "IFAW representatives, veterinarians and other experts have said the seal hunt is humane." FACT: There isn’t a single reputable "expert" or "veterinary group" that has observed the seal hunt and called it humane.
WHAT HE SAID: "Veterinarians hired by the World Wildlife Fund said the seal hunt is conducted in a humane way." FACT: The report produced by these same veterinarians puts forward no fewer than eleven recommendations to make the seal hunt humane.
The public deserves a commitment to honesty and respect for the real facts about how baby seals are being killed during this hunt. Join IFAW and activists from around the world in urging Canada’s Prime Minister to tell the truth about what’s happening on the ice. Sign the petition now!

I don't agree with it, but it is their primary way of life there. They have to feed their families. Besides, the seals have no natural preditors in that area, and if they don't limit the numbers, all of the seals will starve to death.
I come from a family of hunters, so to bash them for what they do for their livelihood would make me feel like a hypocrite.
It hurts my heart, soooooooo bad!!!

I hear you Wynter. I have family who hunts too. But is there a more respectful or quicker way to kill them. I just think bashing them in the head with clubs is a bit brutal, IMO...
I dunno... I've seen my dad miss a shot on a deer and have to follow it for a really long time before he could get another shot or the deer dropped dead. From what my friends who live in the area where the seal clubbing takes place, the clubs pretty much give them an immediate death.
I agree with you DR, Wynter sweetie, I respect your point of view, and your family's. but I don't think it's HUMAN.
We're destroying the world, with our gases, poluition, war, everything...the animals are the only innocent here, and I just don't agree on murdering them this way....

I am AGAINST any and all kinds of hunting regardless of humane or inhumane. The fact is that you are taking a life just for the pleasure of it. If you really need the meat to survive then I understand but just for sport it is SICK, RIDICULOUS, and INCOMPREHENSABLE
These images make me sick to my heart, I feel the pain and I dont know how those people can go home and sleep and live knowing what they do. seeing those poor animals scream in pain. Blugening them to death, it is SICK and must be STOPPED!!!!!!!!

I cannot watch that video. It is just too sad. I do not agree with killing them that way for any reason.
After reading all these comments i just can't bring myself to look at the video.I can't stand to see anything hurt or beaten. It would haunt me for the rest of my life......
I'll never look at the video. I thought the first picture was bad enough. I've been aware of this since I was little when, I saw it in a National Geographic magazine my family subscribed to. This kind of thing makes me literally sick to my stomach. My love for baby harp seals has grown ever since I was a very young girl. Oh, and my parents always donated money because, this issue was/is close to my heart. And, anything to make it better, I'm all for it. Thanks Sica, for the information above.

I can't bring myself to watch the video either but I did sign the petition and agree the brutality HAS to stop.
I can't watch the video. I started it and the picture of the seal they show reminds of me my dog Cooper, so by the previous comments I can't watch it.
I will say the picture looks heart breaking, and cruel and I did sign the petition.

Sica, thanks for posting this, I'm from Canada and it is something I think my country should be ashamed of!!! I think it's disgusting, cruel and completely unnecessary. The best way to stop it is to pressure the government and to NOT BUY FUR!! It is a myth perpetuated by pro-seal lobbyists that the seals will starve to death if they are not murdered. As for the hunters needing money from the seals to feed their families? Also NOT true. Here in Canada we have a social safety net that guarantees people in seasonal jobs (such as these people, primarily fishermen) money during times of the year when they cannot fish. The way these innocent seals are killed is archaic, and they can't even swim away, so they have literally no defense. I don't personally agree with any hunting, but at least a deer can run! I'm urging you ladies who care for animals to please sign the petition if you haven't already. I hope by the time I have children this will be in the past and they will not have to be ashamed of something so sick that their country is known for around the world. Canada is really a wonderful place to live...it's a shame our reputation is marred by something so cruel.

His name was Bob Hunter and he was part of an organization that cared deeply for all sea mammals.
