Fencing the border, originally proposed in the debate over how to stop illegal immigration, is controversial. The Bush administration argues that a Berlin Wall-style barrier would be a huge waste of money — costing up to $8 billion.
Border Patrol Chief David Aguilar says it makes more sense to use a mix of additional agents, better surveillance and tougher enforcement of immigration laws — and fences.
But Hunter points to the experience in San Diego, where the number of illegal migrants arrested is one-sixth of what it was before the fence was built.
"People have made stupid editorial comments about the Great Wall of China," he says, "but the only thing that has worked is that fence."

Post a CommentMay seem strange coming from a democrat. but i totally support building something. The Mexicans are taking over the country and are going about it in the wrong way.
I don't know why but it really reminds me the 2nd world war beggining...

Where I live in NYC is FULL of Mexicans now, they come in ilegally and then start having kids like crazy. I live on a first floor 3 bedroom, very huge apartment, when all my family was together we were just 6 people living there. Now it's just my mom and little sister.
The same apartment above us on the second floor holds 4 mexican families! yes 4 whole families and each mom has about 4 kids. The women are very young, in their 20's and pop a kid every year. It is so sad to see it, but they are heavily ignorant as they think that by having kids they will stay in the country. They also have them to get welfare, for every kid they get 100 bucks of food per month on the tax payers bill.
I'm all for legal immigration, but I really detest the mexican way of doing this. Ofcourse not all Mexicans fall in this category.
I'm still confused about that...I think they should have more agents and police around the border, but building a fence is very extremist.

They should try security correctly, what was previously done was half assed and had minimal security.
If try security correctly with heavy watch then yes, but if they do it and it fails again. Then something needs to be built.
Bush is acting like Hitler, that's what I think, and That's what I'm afraid of. I don't support the Mexican people that is illegal in another country. I think that it's not right. But US, is creating a beautiful castle to stay away from the others American countries, because Canada and US are totally different from us.

Sica the US has always been the big bully, I love it cuz that's where I lived all my life and its a great country. But I am the furst to admit the US is a big bully
A fence is cheaper than paying the salaries of the number of people it would take to secure the border properly. They could use the military, but then you have all those people away from their families for long, long periods of time.
I'm not sure about this. I definitely understand why it is needed, but there's not many Mexicans around here. Because of that, I have a viewpoint that it's not as bad as it probably really is. I'm all for people coming in legally to our country, but I'm not sure how to keep the illegal citizens out. I'm also not so sure a fence will stop someone if they are desperate enough.
It's a country with a great history.

Yayi, I was reading your comment about the apartment building in NYC and was reminded of a story my brother in law was telling me. (Yes, the same brother in law, but this one isn't a stupid or gross story). He went on a mountain climbing trip to Mexico and he went to a town that had billboards hosted by the Catholic church encouraging families to have more children. And below the sign on the street was a poor mother and her children who were shoddily dressed and were all hungry. He said it made him angry and he felt so bad for them.
A study done by Donald Huddle of Rice University continues his ongoing work documenting the high costs of immigration. After reviewing his study this is the extended math my husband came up with to reflect the two current populations - (illegal vs U.S. citizens).
As of right now, if every illegal alien in the U.S. becomes legal, each American citizen will pay $902.00 every year for the rest their lives to subsidize them. Also, the individual yearly cost will continue to increase every year, so it is actually more. In the average lifetime of 78 years = $70,356.00 per American citizen with compounded interest it closer to $750,000.00. Please keep in mind this figure still doesn't include many, many other factors.
Okay, I was just flagged again. My comment did not contain any links, curse words, or any attacks on anyone; nor is this my first comment. What is going on?
Wynter, you probably dont live in a major city, go to NYC, California, Chicago, Philadelphia, Texas and you will see millions of Mexicans.
hehe...my town has about 1200 people. Definitely not a major city and not even close to one really. Memphis is probably the biggest one close to me, and it's over 3 hours away...and not that huge of a city.
SPM i hear you, it makes me angry too, the poorer people are, the more kids they have. The rich barely have any kids, I think its about education.
In Africa these women dont use birth control so they get pregnant every 9 months and thats why we have all these kids dying of hunger around the world
It's simply the US government who are the bullies. They represent the country very badly. Canada, too. You know what it is, it's them acting out of personal preference, NOT what's best for the country as a whole. And their actions make it seem like every single citizen agrees with them. That's what leads to the bashing and the criticizing between countries. It's quite unfortunate that it has to be that way.
Anyway, I'm not a Yank so I can't really answer this question from a Yank's perspective. But it's always a good thing to try and detour immigrants from entering a country illegally. Who knows what their motives are? They could be harmless people in search of a better life, or they could be connected with terrorist organizations. You just don't know. So better to keep them out without incident rather than choosing to address the issue AFTER another national tragedy.
How come stating the cost per U.S citizen to subsidize an illegal alien per year, then the cost over a 78 year life span and finally the compounded interest IS FLAGGED!! I did not even include my vote about this poll or my feelings in any, way, shape, or form. Getting a very bad taste in my mouth over this, especially since this is a personal blog.
BeachBarbie - There is a whole blog where everyone is complaining about being flagged for totally random things. I don't understand why you think its personal. Or political.
In the past the US has been involved in a lot of underhanded operations in Latin America which has worsened the lives of ppl there, eg Nicaragua, Chile, so its kind of ironic that they now have to deal with the consequences of ppl trying to seek a better situtation.
Are we gonna put up a fence to keep those crazy canucks out as well? LOL
Border security is an impotant issue since 9/11 and we do have ways in place to legally become a citizen right? Versus walking through the desert and risking your life.. its a tough topic.
I still find it ironic that they search cars going from the US to Mexico. What are they looking for? Every contraband item in the world is for sale in Tijuana. People are going into Mexico to buy it and try to smuggle it back into the States.. what could you possibly be trying to smuggle into Mexico?
"Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't!"
"the mexican's are taking over the country", "the men are very abusive and beat their wives" and the apartment above your family houses 4 families. so you resent the fact that people from other countries want to immigrate here even though you yourself are an immigrant, assume all mexican men are cruel and are angry at the poor for being poor. gee, i hope you teach civics or something similar.
Twinkle, if you did that we'd just stand behind it and ask you nicely to take it down.
Tor - I think if we did that I'd be climbing it to get into Canada
Canada is looking better and better lately. They may want to consider a wall if the Republicans take office again there may be a mass exodus of disillusions democrats. LOL!
I hear it is beautiful there...
"Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't!"
HAHAHA Ima! Let's go!
Canada is indeed very beautiful. But we have our assheads here, too...just like any other country.
Our government is a couple cans short of a 6-pack, though.
Lol twinkle you are very welcomed to come to Canada.
Oh thanks Honey. You got a spare room?
I didn't understand your point Valery.

Ok I cant vote bc the choices dont compare to my feelings. 1 I think the fence is a good idea sorry but I do. 2 I dont want the fence bc its to flucking expensive. And its not going to do any good. I dont care if you come over here but 1 learn the language (yall know its a pet peeve of mine) and 2 do it legally and dont pop out 50 kids so u can get on welfare and I can support you. Something needs to be done about the immagration thing what they can do IDK maybe take some of that million bajillion dollars give the freaking border patrol a raise and higher some more patrol(these guys make about 9 bucks and hr starting out an that complete bs!) There just gonna get more violent and find other ways to get in.

The baby in my belly made me do it I swear.
Val thats not the point she was making. I think her basis is if you want to come here do it legally. And she gave an example of what shes seen.

your comments are offensive. i'm from san diego and spent some time south of the boarder. anyone living in the cesspool of Tijuana wants a better life. those people come across the boarder, often risking their lives because there is nothing for them in their own country. there are open sewage ditches next to the sidewalks, broken glass sticking out of the black top at the schools and children without shoes who go to bed hungry on every corner. their government is corrupt and there is almost no opportunity for a better life if they stay there. people from all over the world come to this country dreaming of more for themselves and their family. they want health care, a roof over their head, a job with a living wage, education for their children, to move forward on the economic scale. do you think anyone wants to sneak across the boarder in the middle of the night? do you think these people dream of 4 families to an apartment? if they don't speak english their options are limited and yet they still come. they come because the risk to them and their families and the thought of living with many other families is STILL far better than the life they have been given simply because they were born on the other side of the fence. you are preaching hatred and spewing ethnic stereotypes that i find offensive, and frankly it's more than a little disturbing to me that neither the sugar's or other posters have commented on this.
and btw, there is no official language for the united states.
Well for 1 its a rather new post Val an you are more then entitled to that opinion as we are our own. Id love to hear more people come in here and debate this as long as they can do it civilly (did we ever answer me if thats a word?)I just think sure we all want people to have better lifes but please become legal.

Ahem...I'm afraid I have to agree with Val on this one.
I agree with Val. And I think that the US should be more flexible about giving the green card for people who really want to work and have a decent life.
I never wanted to live in US, I'd love to travel to know Los Angeles, New York, it would be great, but I never thought about living. Here I'm Simone, I'm a recepcionist, I have a name, there I would be just one more LATINO! And I hate that!

Sica, I don't really think its that bad in the US, especially in the urban and metro areas. I'm a latina and I've never ever felt discriminated against, or like people didn't want me someplace.
To quote Carlos Mencia, "who would build it?" LOL!
If I had my way, for every hard-working illegal that sneaks there way in the country, there would exit one ignorant, idiotic, dumb-fuck native.
LOL High!
haha! now that's fair trade that i like!
You're on fire today High! That's exactly how I feel.
Yeah. But where would they go? I don't think it's fair to put them off on Canada.
LOL!
I don't know, that's the image that I have...Do you work?

Sica, right now I'm a full-time, hardcore student.
I have worked for law firms and in other professional environments though, and I never felt that way.
I've also lived and gone to school in NYC, the metro area, and now I live in an area away from that, so I have experienced different types of settings with different types of populations.
That's nice. I'm gonna be a hardcore student next year *hopefuly* hehehehe
What I was saying is that bothers me the fact that people who live here and have a carreer, for example, a lawyer, go to US and accept the condition of selling Hot Dog, you know? I think that latin people have to stop serving the Americans a little bit, and then, they'll need someone to take care of their babies, to clean their houses, to park their cars, etc etc etc...

Good Luck with your studies next year. Hopefully you will keep blogging on here to keep us posted of your progress!
Oh, I better understand what you meant now. Ideally, that would be nice if it worked that way, but I don't see it changing any time soon. It's not just the latino immigrant population that suffers like that once they emigrate to the US, people from all over the world need to start over with their educations and low jobs to get ahead again. I study and have worked with many of these highly educated people. In fact, I tutor them now. It's tough for the immigrants to NOt take those measly jobs, bc its the only way for them to survive in our economy. And, likewise, its how our economy survives and how we can all afford to buy so many products @ Target, Macys, Walmart, etc.
Sica, I see what you're saying, and I wish the path to survival and success wasn't so harsh for immigrants, but I really don't see it changing.
